Care & Maintenance of your RUBICAB Deck

Although DECKO composite wood products require minimal maintenance, there are some basic tips you should be aware of to keep your deck and other products looking great for many years to come.  Regular sweeping and cleaning, as you would normally do to keep your house clean, are generally enough to keep your deck well maintained.

Storage, Handling and Installation

  • Handle the planks with care during installation and avoid any harsh contact with other materials
  • Avoid harsh contact of tools or screws on the deck while you’re building it
  • Always pre-drill to avoid the bit gouging your deck
  • All DECKO products should be stored away from direct sunlight on a flat surface and in a dry area avoiding exposure to moisture
  • Make sure your deck has adequate ventilation
  • It’s important to ensure during installation that there is proper drainage underneath your deck and that it isn’t exposed to stale water for long periods of time.

Removing Waste

Waste can be removed as per usual construction material disposal.

General Cleaning

Cleaning your deck is best done with soapy water and a sponge mop along the grain. Make sure you clean each plank one after the other and rinse regularly to ensure that you’re not moving dirty water around. Use a stiff brush and low pressure hose to avoid mud and dirt build up.

Maintenance Cleaning

We recommend a maintenance clean using a high-pressure water washer with a maximum power output of 2500psi and a 25 degree spray tip at a 35 degree angle every 6 – 12 months. Ensure you spray with the grain of your deck as spraying across the surface can cause damage. Try to ensure that each plank is sprayed with 100% coverage per pass.

Painting, Sealing and Staining

We strongly recommend against applying a 3rd party coating to DECKO products. However, if you do decide for some reason to apply an external coating it should be done when the deck is fully cleaned and dried. Be aware that if you do apply an external coating, your warranty will be voided.

Scratches and Scuffs

Be aware that any sharp or hard objects such as furniture legs or rocks will scratch your deck, so make sure you protect it. It’s typical that exposure to the sun will naturally cause small scratches to fade away within few weeks. DECKO boards also have the advantage of being made using an extrusion process which means the material is the same all through the board compared to other composites which have foils or coatings as the top layer. You can use 40 grade sand paper to remove any accidental scratch or stubborn stains without damaging most DECKO boards. Just gently brush the area and apply a wet cloth afterwards.

General Care

DECKO composite decks are extremely durable and with appropriate care should provide you with many years of low maintenance enjoyment.

We recommend the following measures to maintain and prevent damage to your DECKO deck.

  • It’s important to clean stains as soon as possible in case of spillage. Clean with warm soapy water, hose and a firm brush or 40 grade sanding paper.
  • Do not allow metal items prone to rust to sit on your deck for extended periods of time
  • Make sure there are no large rocks or other sharp objects on your deck which can damage the boards
  • A mat is useful in areas where it cannot get saturated and exposed to the direct sunlight
  • Also place an outdoor mat or protector around BBQs to avoid fat stains which can also be removed if necessary with sanding paper.
  • It’s important to regularly clean the deck of debris where possible before it builds up in the gaps and cracks. A blower/vac or brush will do the job.
  • Consider using the heavy textured finish boards if there is a high risk of scratching such as by large dogs as pets.

Water Stains

You might notice some water stains on the surface of the boards after rainwater has evaporated. Water staining is relatively common, especially in the first months after the installation, as the wood component in composites releases tannin. It should disappear within a few months. Direct exposure to the sun and rain will activate this natural process faster and it will take shorter time for the elements to stabilise themselves. Staining is normally more prominent in lighter colours and will vary dependent upon other environmental conditions such as local flora and fauna around the deck which might make staining worse. Avoid dripping and pooling of water on the deck where possible to avoid excessive water stains. It can generally be cleaned with soapy water and a mop with the grain. Alternatively, stainless steel wool also produces good results but takes longer to complete.

Always make sure to test any cleaning agent in an inconspicuous area prior to application, as stains or damage caused by cleaners or oils are not covered under the warranty. DO not use bleach as it will affect the colour of your boards significantly.
